This year, we are celebrating St Patrick’s Day on Wednesday, March 17th, 2021. So, get ready to wear your green and find a reason to eat, drink, and enjoy St. Patrick’s Day 2021 to your heart’s content!

St. Patrick’s Day Background

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on the 17th of March because it is believed to be St. Patrick’s death anniversary. St. Patrick has been remembered and celebrated throughout history for his dedication to promoting Christianity in Ireland. In the United States, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated to commemorate the deeds of this inspiring Patron Saint of Ireland.

Montserrat’s National Holiday

St Patrick’s Day is celebrated in other countries as well. However, there is only one Caribbean island that celebrates it as a national holiday. This Emerald Isle is called Montserrat. Montserrat has been celebrating St Patrick’s Day since the 1700s.

African slaves planned an uprising on March 17th, 1768 against the Irish slave masters on this island. St. Patrick’s day in Montserrat has, since, become more than just a week-long celebration with parades, parties, concerts, seafood festivals, all-white affairs, and more.

With each St Patrick’s Day, Montserratians and friends remember the rebellion, oppose the slave-masters, and bring more love to their sweet Island.

Montserrat, St. Patrick’s Day, and their importance to We W.I.L.L. Thru Sports!

Both Montserrat and St. Patrick’s Day 2021 celebrations are important to We W.I.L.L. Thru Sports. That’s because two of our esteemed board members, Ms. Dianne Woods and Ms. Mary Woods, have family from there.

So, here’s a heartfelt shoutout to the following families from Montserrat: Woods, Herbert, Halsey, Lee, West, Howe, and many others.

Everyone is family in Montserrat and we’ll miss not having the chance to enjoy festivities for St. Patrick’s Day 2021 because of the global pandemic.
