March Madness 2021 is one of the most discussed topics this month, both online and in real life. Everyone’s talking about it. It’s all people can think of. Whether you are a parent, a student, or a coach, March Madness 2021 is a big deal.
And truth be told, we’re all excited to watch how it turns out this year. But before we start talking about March Madness 2021 and what it has in store for us, let’s take a brief look into what March Madness is all about.
What is March Madness?
March Madness is an annual NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament. It’s one of the most popular and exciting sports events in the United States. The NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament received the name “March Madness” after a former Chicago sportswriter, Brent Musburger, used the term in a 1982 sports coverage.
History of March Madness
The term “March Madness” has existed since 1939 when a high school official in Chicago called the excitement of the Illinois State High School games “March Madness”. The Illinois official, Henry Porter, coined the term “March Madness” in 1939 and NCAA adopted it in 1982 after the broadcast. Since its inception (1939) and adoption (1982), the Madness in March has lived on.
March Madness Teams – Equal Opportunity For All
The March Madness NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament offers great opportunities to the underdogs. Plus, it also serves as an excellent opportunity for athletes to be scouted and drafted to the NBA.
Single-Elimination Tournament
Moreover, this is a single-elimination tournament. This means that the only way for teams to keep playing in this tournament is by giving it their best shot. There is no room for mistakes. There are no second chances. One wrong move can cost you your future.
This should explain the shockingly high level of dedication, drive, and competition that is generally seen in the participating teams.
The Chance of a Lifetime!
A single loss would get you eliminated from the whole tournament. It could be the first and last game you might ever play as a college senior. March Madness gives all the college programs a fair chance to compete and win their way to the top.
Some programs have more funding than others, but March Madness offers an equal opportunity to all basketball programs. It helps basketball programs, that wouldn’t normally get exposure, be just as recognized as some of the more well-known schools.
In other words, it evens the odds of winning for all teams no matter how they were ranked during the season.
The Global Pandemic & Its Impact On The Sports!
In 2020, March Madness was canceled due to the pandemic and we all saw how badly it affected the sports world. The cancellation of March Madness 2020 greatly affected the prospects of college seniors.
As a result, students didn’t get many opportunities to prove their athletic abilities and pursue their potential careers in sports. Hence, fewer students were being scouted during the year 2020 due to the global pandemic.
